OLD SMOKEY 7″ / OWT NOW

GF005 cover

Creeping into the year [2013], conjured up from the thick Georgia fog, we are pleased to bring you the OLD SMOKEY 7″ [GF005]

“Soothing”, “Strange” and “Stringy” could be the first impression of veteran gypsy ears,  geared and callused from our previous “Rock, Raw and Pop” releases, this [OS 7″] marks the dizzy dawn of what we like to call our “country Strange” sector, by-way of the Gory Gospel truth being, that this fine piece of wax was summoned up, smoked out -if you will, in the summer months of 2012 by Athens native, Jim Willingham (Ham1, Infinity Cat Recordings).

Nestled comfortably behind a banjo, matched with his lyrical approach (for lack of more fitting slang) – melodies are plucked straight out of the mind’s darkest neighborhoods. Fellow stringers Jacob Morris, John Fernandes, Jason Trahan and Robert Lomax join in together, forming a mysterious musical cloud composing of strings, woodwinds and a 70+ year aged bass drum head.

OLD SMOKEY

Old Smokey’s debut 7″ release bares three-KUTS with Side A’s opener “Lazy Eye”, which sounds as if it were originally featured on “The Wickerman” Soundtrack (1973), but some how, rather found itself reincarnated -falling through the laws of time. . . and landing on your turntable, here in this strange modern world.

Allow your senses to fall into the cradle that is “The Natural”, the instrumental stand out of the release, hypnotizing at moments signaled ahead by bells, haunted by whistles.

The B side is totally consumed in the whopping 5+ min trance titled “Weeping Willow” – perhaps the most somber of the the three selections,  featuring rhythmic “trap-doors of change” that complete the knot in this tangled memory of bliss.

Special editions of the 7″ will include an inner CD Sleeve (with art designed by Fernandes’ son) that includes Exxxtra tracks for your own exxxtended adventure into the mystical haze that is Old Smokey.

WWHITE RATTT

Here at GF, We’ve been tickling the musical catalog of Athens’ HAM1 for well over the past year.  Although the band is now defunct and no longer together, they’ve left behind countless capsules that shall not cease to be re-discovered as time grows into future.  “WHITE RAT” is one tune especially charming to the emotional ear, plucked directly from  “The Captain’s Table” record  (2007 / Orange Twin Records).  It grooves, prooves and mooves your thought process; alarming the mellow moods that your mind has stored away for the day.  Take it in, catch the HAM1 Review that our own Zeb Garrison posted earlier this year and CUT YOUR TEETH on their new incarnation around town, known as OLD SMOKEY.

OLD SMOKEY in the STUDIO

OLD SMOKEY found themselves in our studio recently. Rolling in from Athens GA, This band OOZES colorful melodies and drives their Psych-Folk sound with dark rhythms that is bound to tickle yer toes.  They arrived by way of one car overheating and pushing through 105+ degree weather;  Settling into the GF studio – Jim, John, Jacob, Jason and Rob – have created something that we feel falls along the lines of a lost cut, snapped from the Original Wicker Man Soundtrack with the attitude of Lou Reed and the VU. If we may BE SO BOLD.

Here we have a single from their session. A FANTASTIC TUEWNE entitled “LAZY EYE”

Let’s Go On and On and On (Ham1)

You may remember seeing these cats around Athens, and if you do then I’m sure you remember how it touched you, in some way or another. “Let’s Go On and On and On” is the 4th album by Ham1. The following is a review of this little 2010 gem put out by Cleft Records.

Ham1’s 2010 release “Let’s Go On and On and On” is an album of beautifully executed guitar tones and mixes that teem with sonic gifts for any listener.  Unrestrained melodic “warm fuzzies” spill onto and swim upon each track’s evolving landscape from corners you might not have been sure were there.  Continue reading “Let’s Go On and On and On (Ham1)”
