Pine Tar Rage debuts new single

Fellow rock and rollers of Carolina known as “Pine Tar Rage” have announced plans to release their new single on the Gypsy Farm record label.  The song, entitled I’m Gonna Have a Good Time punches right out of the gate with fierce determination; hell bent in fact, on making the most of one evening.  Writer, singer, and guitarist Ed Campbell declares, “This is about someone who’s been working two months straight without a day off.  They’ve saved up their money, stock piled their drugs only to get the flu that day…. but they’re gonna have a real good time, whether they like it or not.”

Ed, who is also known throughout the region for his bluegrass group “The Drovers Old Time Medicine Show” (formed over 30 years ago) says he’s “a rocker at heart” and that PTR serves as “an outlet for the rowdier compositions requiring more electricity” – although some songs inevitably cross over between the two bands such as last Summer’s “I Got a Headlight Out”.

Campbell is joined by lead guitarist Brant Duncan of Clemson area folk duo “The Elegance, bassist Jeff Barrett of Central’s “Wheeler, and drummer Zeke Sayer of Georgia-based band “The Humms.

Matthew Garrison debuts first EP

Marble Soup_2017 press photo by WJAY.jpg

Using the alias “Marble Soup” local Georgia native Matthew Garrison released his self-titled debut EP last month as download, stream and limited edition compact disc.  The EP marks the first new physical release on the Gypsy Farm label since 2014 and is the result of several recording sessions spaced between Lula and Lavonia, Georgia dating back to 2015.

Engineered by Jake Stargel, the takes were then mixed at Gypsy Farm Studio before final mastering at Chase Park Transduction.  After touring the U.S. twice in 2017 with Elf Power, Garrison enlisted the help of Larry Choskey (of Nate and the Nightmares) for art direction and cover design, then set the EP release date for Jan 2018 and it has met with positive reviews since it’s release :

“Clocking in with a mere four songs, this little record does a fine job of exhibiting Garrison’s songwriting, which harkens back to NRBQ, a little Randy Newman and perhaps a slight amount of Gram Parsons to boot” – Gordon Lamb – “Threats and Promises” – Flagpole Magazine

“With it’s ominous beat, Marble Soup’s ‘Janet Lorraine’ solicits the listener immediately to a soundscape where time stands before inevitably running out” – WJAY – GF Press Editor

Purchase/stream the Marble Soup EP via Bandcamp or any online distributor.

Athens, GA based pianist known as T.S. Woodward debuted a new video earlier this month via Dominar Films – outlining a plan to finally release his long-awaited concept album.  The project originally began production in 2013 before eventually transforming into a double-album with the addition of a live recording titled “In The Black Box” captured during Woodward’s 2015 graduation from the University of Georgia for studies in Popular Music Composition, a major which T.S. created himself after initially being declined entry into the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.

Woodward commented that the album is a “surrealist’s guide to navigating the dark descent into and out of a dream. Everything is complete except the physical release!”

Rewards for donations include everything from a digital version of the LP – all the way up to – T.S. delivering an actual piano to your home, spot tuning included!

Catch T.S. Woodward and his ensemble at this year’s Athfest – Friday June 24th on the Hull St. Stage at 7:15pm!

T.S. WOODWARD to preview “How To Breathe Underwater” Album at UGA / April 1st

11124703_607663599366809_7540541032450466450_n

The first day of April has long been remembered as “All Fools’ Day” for many reasons.  However, exempt from that list of foolery is one T.S. Woodward, whom you may have spotted traveling around the classic city; mid-way through his tango-of-death with 88 keys.  Woodward made an “official” debut in 2013 with the release of Dominar’s “BLUE RIBBON” music video.  Since then, he has been hard at work on an album of recordings that will ultimately be submitted as his senior thesis in Popular Music Composition, a degree that Woodward designed himself.   The finished album is titled “How to Breathe Underwater” and it will premiere on April 1st @ exactly 5PM for one showing only in The Dancz Center for New Music on the 2nd floor of UGA’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music.

To better explain the situation, we requested a statement and the following descended upon the field at Gypsy Farm late last week, attached to a fast-dwindling balloon, it read :

“A few years ago I created my own major at UGA; I did this by outlining a unique path of study which was specific to my interests and incorporated upper level coursework from the departments of Music Composition, Creative Writing, and Music Business. Additionally, I proposed a senior thesis project which would require me to write, record, and produce a full length “album” of original material, the graded submission of which (alongside an academic paper) would ultimately determine whether or not I graduate. This major is called Popular Music Composition, and on Wednesday, April 1st, at exactly 5PM within the grand hall of The Dancz Center for New Music, the question of my graduation will finally be answered as I present my completed thesis, How to Breathe Underwater, in front of a live studio audience and my 3 esteemed committee members, Dr. Valdez, Dr. Pavlic, and Mr. David Barbe.

857438_439785352821302_1869546064347722931_o

The first half of this recital will consist of the world premiere of my thesis, How to Breathe Underwater, in the form of a stereophonic playback of the 28 minute album in its entirety from start to finish and without pause. This is not an “album release” but rather an exclusive public screening of the album before the inevitable waiting period to get it pressed and distributed to record stores. It is worth noting that The Dancz Center for New Music, aka The Black Box, is the same state-of-the-art performance hall in which the majority of this work was recorded and mixed and is therefore the ideal place in which to listen to it.

The second half of this recital will consist of a live performance of B-sides and other material written by T.S. Woodward, performed by himself at the piano and with the help of his friends, The Phantasmagoric Chamber Orchestra, whose makeup is as follows:

Zeke Sayer – Drumset
Matthew Garrison – Upright Bass
Nicholas Mallis – Electric Guitar
Dave Kirslis – Acoustic Guitar
Jeff Webber – Synthesizer
Ember Remliel – Backup vocals

This performance will be recorded and archived by the hardworking composition staff at UGA, as well as by my talented friends and colleagues Mr. Neal Warner & Alex Kroh.

TS piano

I would like to note that none of this is or would be possible without the graciousness and support of those closest to me both inside and out of The University of Georgia. And so…

It is with the utmost pleasure and excitement that I invite you to please join me for this one of a kind performance of a work that is representative of years of study and labor… whose surreal nature has been at once borne out of and painstakingly constructed atop the ruins of my dreams and nightmares… and which was conceived during the quiet, borrowed hours between midnight and dawn within the hallowed halls of The Hugh Hodgson School of Music.”
