Timmy and his all new Tumbler band are set to land on your turntable immediately – yes folks GF’s sixth official release is here! This debut 7″ of one Timothy Schreiber (Col. Knowledge and the Lickity Splits / DARK MEAT) captures live action musical movements accented by a backing band known as “The Tumblers” (members of Mouser, The Cryptides, All City Cannonballers and Grape Soda) to complete GF006, THE HEAD HONEY EP. A release party is to be held at the 40 watt club on Fryday the 13th 200013 with supporting acts SHOAL CREEK STRANGLERS, GHOST LIGHTS and MOTHER THE CAR.
You can order the TUMBLE 7″ direct from the GF store, or get a customized colored cover from Timmy himself on December 13th!
Quicker than thee stench of expensive bourbon oozing out of Washington today, Elf Power releases their new record on Orange Twin / Darla. The band visited GF studio during the Summer of 2012 to track for the album, listen to the title track “Sunlight On The Moon” via soundcloud below :
and stream the entire record (for a few more days) via NPR
“[Elf Power] recorded the latest record in a variety of settings ranging from singer/songwriter Andrew Rieger’s home studio, to Athens, GA’s The Glow studio, to Lavonia, GA’s Gypsy Farm Studios, a long derelict country music theatre located in rural Georgia. Newly renovated and transformed into a recording studio, the beautiful auditorium hosted concerts from the likes of Dolly Parton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and George Jones throughout the 1970s and 1980s.”

Local weavers of the string dream known as “Old Smokey” have finished their debut record, titled “Wester Easter” and may we say, it’s an ear tickling treasure for sure. While we have not confirmed when it is to be released, our morning feeds are still spurting streams of magic via Robert Lomax’s direct vimeo line that reevealed a new video of the band’s latest single, “Leggy”. Shot on the spot at GFR, the clip captures cameo appearances by GF patrolmen Sgt Boogie and Funkin Duncan. Watch and Share via the player below :

There’s high tale of gypsy business this Thursday night, featuring one of the classic city’s most recent incarnations in Rock and RAW, The Free Associates. This vicious group of scoundrels first appeared on our radar earlier this year when they booked a session at GF studio and proceeded to lay down an assortment of scorching singles. Currently, our sound engineers are sifting through the tapes, composing their debut release, and boy is it gonna be a BLOW OWT. But don’t take our word for it! The following is a blog post taken from thee HMB feed this morning :
The first Athens GA band I’d like to bring to the table for splendid observation is a vicious 3 piece Rock/Blues group relatively recent to the scene but not at all to the craft/livelihood of Rock N Roll . They are The Free Associates. Good God,man! If you have vicariously made your way around the nightlife of town in hopes for a good show (or hopes of your own personal means, for that matter), there is a good chance these guys were the reason you didn’t wake up until 3pm! We’ve all been there. Bouncing around trying to find a good show only to find pretentious hipsters with their iPuds, Punk bands that care more about how overtly dirty they look rather than what they’re playing, ’desperate to be’ reincarnations of Brantley Gilbert, overbearing Indie kid turned Math Metal wizards(thank God for effect pedals), and lets not forget the fedora sporting Folk masters. But have no fear! The Associates are here! The best thing about [them] is they’re an actual band! Not tied down to digital equipment and no theatrics to boot! Not to say that all bands/music in town isn’t genuine, there is something to admire and learn with these guys playing who they are and doing it very stripped down without reliance on their gear. Just how Rock and Roll began…READ FULL ARTICLE

At the lovely FARM 255 on Washington st in Athens GA, this Fryday FryDAY FRYDAY March Eighth.
Creeping into the year [2013], conjured up from the thick Georgia fog, we are pleased to bring you the OLD SMOKEY 7″ [GF005]
“Soothing”, “Strange” and “Stringy” could be the first impression of veteran gypsy ears, geared and callused from our previous “Rock, Raw and Pop” releases, this [OS 7″] marks the dizzy dawn of what we like to call our “country Strange” sector, by-way of the Gory Gospel truth being, that this fine piece of wax was summoned up, smoked out -if you will, in the summer months of 2012 by Athens native, Jim Willingham (Ham1, Infinity Cat Recordings).
Nestled comfortably behind a banjo, matched with his lyrical approach (for lack of more fitting slang) – melodies are plucked straight out of the mind’s darkest neighborhoods. Fellow stringers Jacob Morris, John Fernandes, Jason Trahan and Robert Lomax join in together, forming a mysterious musical cloud composing of strings, woodwinds and a 70+ year aged bass drum head.
Old Smokey’s debut 7″ release bares three-KUTS with Side A’s opener “Lazy Eye”, which sounds as if it were originally featured on “The Wickerman” Soundtrack (1973), but some how, rather found itself reincarnated -falling through the laws of time. . . and landing on your turntable, here in this strange modern world.
Allow your senses to fall into the cradle that is “The Natural”, the instrumental stand out of the release, hypnotizing at moments signaled ahead by bells, haunted by whistles.
The B side is totally consumed in the whopping 5+ min trance titled “Weeping Willow” – perhaps the most somber of the the three selections, featuring rhythmic “trap-doors of change” that complete the knot in this tangled memory of bliss.
Special editions of the 7″ will include an inner CD Sleeve (with art designed by Fernandes’ son) that includes Exxxtra tracks for your own exxxtended adventure into the mystical haze that is Old Smokey.
